What we’re reading/watching/listening to-

What do the Euro Cup, dreary weather, and the Emmys have in common??? Find out in our newest post when we give you our latest pick!

If you don’t know the answer, you might be one of the few people left in the US who has not seen the best “feel good” series of the pandemic. If so, we both highly recommend that you watch Ted Lasso!

The series begins with Bex, a socialite in the UK, acquiring her ex husband’s “football” (aka soccer) team in her divorce settlement. In order to get revenge on her ex husband, Bex decides to set her new football team up to fail, by hiring Ted Lasso, an American college football coach. (see below for Season 1 and 2 trailers)

There are plenty of the usual funny cultural misunderstandings (biscuits vs cookies, soccer vs. football, etc). But Ted also uses his “all-in” coaching and over-the-top enthusiasm in a sport that he actually knows nothing about. This alone provides plenty of humor for the show!

Ted Lasso’s character is so ridiculously cheesy, that it’s fun to laugh at him and at all of his crazy antics. But as the series progresses, you learn that his character is much more complex. He left a difficult family situation back in the US, and this job in England is a bit of an escape from his problems. And while you start to genuinely feel sorry for Ted, you also realize that he himself knows just how corny he is, and that you’re actually laughing with him, not at him. In fact, his entire “aw shucks” shtick seems to be a way to make those around him feel better.

Not only is the show a much-needed lighthearted comedy during a difficult time in the world, but you find yourself becoming attached to the characters, and you don’t want the series to come to an end. The writers must have understood this, because the second season will already be out on July 23. That leaves just enough time for you to catch up. Here’s to more feeling good! As Ted would say –

“Do you know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? Got a ten second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.”
