August is here, which means school is around the corner and days are getting shorter. We hope that you can squeeze a little more summer fun in before it comes to an end. So we’re giving you one more recommendation for a “summer beach read”. Take a look!
When I saw this title: Where the Grass is Green and the Girls are Pretty in the “New Books” section at our local library, I knew I had to take a closer look! Throwback to our youthful 80s, right? And then I noticed that it is written by Lauren Weisberger, the author of many novels I’ve enjoyed: Devil Wears Prada, When Life Gives You Lululemons, The Singles Game, to name a few. I knew it would be a fun “tell all” kind of book – perfect for a lazy summer day.
…… and once I started reading, I found an added bonus – the novel is set in a fictional northern suburb of NYC on Long Island Sound. It’s a humorous take on a town where lax is everything, and moms with Ivy League MBAs compete to run the PTA. Hmmmmm….I think that reminds me of a place I know very well. Lol!
Weisberger tells the story of two sisters living two very different, but equally interesting lives: Peyton is a national television personality with a demanding job in NYC, while Skye is trying to throw herself into meaningful volunteer work, because she feels guilty about not using her prestigious degree as a stay at home mom. And just when things seem to be going so well for both sisters, a major event provides a serious setback for both of them.
It’s fun to see the ways in which the writer weaves current events and scandals into the story about Peyton and Skye. Adult sisters, children of aging parents, and parents of teenagers will all find ways in which they can relate to these characters. This novel is funny, interesting, and hard to put down – you can’t wait to find out how these large-scale problems are resolved.
Disclaimer: I won’t always recommend fun beach reads!
